Question:  How can I develop quality inspection standards for a manufacturing process?

Answer : I have done this often. I usually start by defining the process. This is critical! As Paul Collinsworth has noted you need to identify critical process points and establish the measuring criteria and method for each of these points. This may be as simple or as complicated as you make it, but usually simpler is better. I say that because it is easier to train people to use it and easier to monitor.

You will need to understand the basic principles of SPC (Statistical Process Control) and/or TQP (Total Quality Process). Any entry level quality control book will have all of the words, jargons, etc. that make up a quality system. Most of them will explain and show the steps required for any person or organization to be able to design and implement one. One of the best for this purpose was compiled by Ford Motor Company and I use it as my goto SPC Handbook for establishing a fundamental program that will bring any process into control if followed. It is easy to implement. It will teach you how to create control charts, upper and lower control limits, plot and analyze data, and more.

A good quality program is not a daunting task. Define the process, identify the highest loss points, establish the critical criteria and you will be rewarded quite quickly with improved output and a happier production team. Utilize a Pareto Analysis. The 80/20 rule will suffice for the time being without getting into Six Sigma and other massive quality programs and the results will be seen much faster.(Author: Stephen Reamer   From: Quora)
