Answer: There are, I think, more advantages to work in quality control, and in quality in general, than disadvantages. That being noted, there are a couple of disadvantages, which can be difficult to overcome in some circumstances. Neither is particularly unique to quality control, but quality inspectors and technicians may feel that they encounter the first more often than people in other occupational specialties.

That first is the old and well known “blame the messenger” effect. QC people do, on occasion, encounter resistance from process operators and managers when the QC person reports findings of errors, mistakes, flaws, and other non-compliance with respect to inspection and test criteria. People don’t like being told they’ve made a mistake or that they’ve allowed something past them in process that they should have caught instead of sending the item to inspection. Sometimes they take that personally and make matters difficult for the QC person.

The other disadvantage is that if the QC inspector/tester is really competent, really good at the job, his or her manager may make an effort to keep them in that job instead of allowing them to advance. Obviously, there are situations in a workplace where opportunity for advancement is limited, but the matter can be difficult for the QC person in a workplace where there is opportunity but they are being kept back despite turning in an excellent performance.
