Question: How can I develop quality inspection standards for a manufacturing process?
Answer : To some extent, that is process dependent. For instance, in-process inspection standards for a manufacturer doing final assembly of hardware components and sub-assemblies from a number of different suppliers will have different requirements than a manufacturer processing different materials, biologic and chemical, into pharmaceuticals.
Generally, though, you need to identify critical process points, the points in a process beyond which you cannot revert to the previous process state, and inspect or measure as the manufacture arrives at that critical process, but prior to entry.
For some processes, there are already inspection standards available; that’s particularly true for some engineered products. In others, the manufacturing and quality management team needs to develop some sort of standard for each critical inspection point, be it an absolute go/no-go sort of inspection or a statistical standard, such as a measurement with an acceptable range around some mean or average, and perhaps a sampling method to go along with the developed standard.
